Varanasi (Kashi) is India’s most ancient city of music. The tradition of classical music here is believed to be linked to the Puranic age. Lord Shiva is regarded as the original proponent of music and dance. This heritage continues to live on through the ghats of the Ganga, the temples, and the guru-shishya parampara.
The Banaras Gharana is a major pillar of Hindustani classical music. Here, emotionally rich forms such as Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, and Kajri developed specially. The tradition of tabla founded by Pandit Ram Sahai and the legacy of shehnai established by Ustad Bismillah Khan are world-famous.
